History

The development of the College English Department at Henan University has been highlighted with 6 important dates:

Before June, 1981:A section belongs to the School of Foreign Languages (called the Department of Foreign Languages at that time), named the ‘Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section.’

June, 1981: Separation from the School of Foreign Languages and founding of the College English Department, which was a basic teaching unit of the mid-level institute with the authorization of the university.

1991:The College English Department was upgraded in 1991 to the director level.

The end of 1993:TheCollege English Department was integrated into the School of Foreign Languages with the authorization of the School of Foreign Languages.

April 1999:TheCollege English Department was separated from the School of Foreign Languages again and was upgraded to the director level with the authorization of the university.

April 2002: With the consolidation of the three universities, the present Department was established.

Mission

The College English Department is devoted to excellence in English teaching, learning and research, and to developing outstanding language learners who make a difference globally. The department takes care of the English teaching of all the non-English major students of the university. Focusing on the cultivation of the students’ skills in English, the department keeps doing research and reform and has made great achievements in curriculum, teaching modes, and evaluation, especially in the level-based teaching and building of campus culture. The university plays a leading role in College English Teaching Reform in Henan Province. The University is the CET4 & CET6 (College English Test Band 4 & Band 6) test center in Henan Province, and the only online CET Spoken English Test Center in Henan Province.

The department has five divisions:Reading & Writing Division I, Reading & Writing Division II, Listening & Speaking Division I, Listening & Speaking Division II, Continuing Education Division.

Campus Activities

English Culture Festival

Our English Culture Festival’s goal is to “promote language learning, teaching and using through competitions.” It offers a wide range of cultural activities for students on campus. The annual program has become a distinctive feature of Henan University by improving students’ language ability, deepening English education reform,and fostering a culture-rich campus.

Student Exchange

We’ve been long dedicated to developing partnerships and collaborations with prestigious universities throughout the world. The A-K Forum with The University of Akron and the Student Video Exchange Program with Beloit College allows our students to have free exchanges and discussions with their U.S. counterparts. Their excellent language performance was highly thought of by the U.S. professors.

Faculty & Staff

Of the 100 full-time faculty and staff, 92 are full-time teachers. Among them, 36 have obtained professorship titles and 24 have overseas experience.

With continuous researches and exploration in English language education, our faculty has made notable achievements, ranking at the top in several national teaching competitions for college English teachers.

As of May 2015, the Department has a total regular work force of 100 faculty and staff who come with a diverse academic background covering TESOL, English Language and Literature, Studies of Translation and Interpreting, etc.. The wide range of interests and interdisciplinary character make the Department a leading unit of the university.
